Abstract: |
The assessment identified that the site lay outside the boundaries of the Roman, Saxon and medieval town of Rochester, on what was probably agricultural land. Saxon burials were identified to the north of the site, however, the site lay beyond the limit of the cemetery. Between 1812-1818, Fort Clarence was constructed on the site. It was part of a network of forts and towers designed to protect Chatham dockyards from landward attack. Although Fort Clarence lay outside the study area, associated structures, such as the tunnel system and possible basement levels, were within the limits of the study area.[Au(abr)] |
