Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation of a proposed second lake at Stafford House, West Stafford comprised the machine excavation of two trenches. The site lay north of an earlier evaluation, which demonstrated the presence of well-preserved peat deposits, with the lower levels likely to date to the Mesolithic period. The second evaluation revealed two linear features likely to represent drainage channels which were part of a more extensive water meadow system constructed shortly after 1830. There were no features derived from settlement activity within the trenches; a single prehistoric flint blade was the only artefact recovered of pre-modern date. This evidence, and the low-lying nature of the field, supported the view that the area of the proposed second lake was unlikely to contain evidence for early settlement activity. [Au(abr)] |
