Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken of a section of the medieval Musbury Deer Park boundary prior to the construction of the Samlesbury to Helmshore Natural Gas Supply Pipeline. The excavation of the ditch revealed a series of event horizons demonstrating the role the ditch had, not only as a boundary, but also for drainage of the area. The boundary ditch continued to serve this latter function today, as water still moved though the sediments within the ditch. A post-medieval culvert was located along the eastern edge of the ditch, also serving this purpose. No traces of the banks associated with the ditch were visible within the limits of the excavated area, although banks on both sides of the ditch were visible as earthworks to the north and south of the site. Four bulk samples from the identified ditch fills were rapidly assessed for plant macrofossils. The samples contained some charcoal and wood pieces, a few carbonised and uncarbonised seeds, and abundant rock and coal fragments. The palaeoenvironmental assessment suggested that fills 3, 4, and 6 (respectively the fifth, fourth and secondary fills of the feature in a sequence of six) may have developed as the result of natural hill wash, and that fill 5, the tertiary fill of the boundary, may have originated either as the result of a natural event or from the deliberate backfilling of the ditch.
