Abstract: |
Excavation on the line of the link road identified a number of linear features and a group of intercutting pits which may have been related to tanning or retting during the medieval and possibly post-medieval periods. At the south side of the site, deposits relating to the formerly marshy nature of the area were revealed, including a small area of deliberately placed stones which may have represented a path leading over the marshy area towards the river. Environmental assessment of samples from the pits suggested that they had been cleaned out after use and backfilled with agricultural debris. To the south of the site, two pits seen during a watching brief may also have related to tanning. [Au(abr)] |
