Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken on the site of a proposed development. A desk-based assessment, aerial photographic survey and a geophysical survey of the site, prior to the field evaluation, had identified two enclosures and a number of other linear and pit type features. Eleven of the eighteen evaluation trenches contained archaeological features, two contained only undated tree-throw holes and five were blank. The features identified by non-intrusive survey were located within the trenches and excavated; no datable cultural artefacts were recovered. Two ditches produced pieces of roundwood that could be scientifically dated. The only positive data from the site, other than the discovery of features, was palaeo-environmental. The two main enclosures appeared to have had hedge banks and were almost certainly used for stock control. The evidence suggested that in the past the site was used for agricultural purposes, with seasonal activity dependant upon the height of the water table. The absence of anthropogenic material from the site rendered its archaeological potential limited. [Au(abr)] |
