Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological survey and building recording was carried out at a lead mining complex. The first documentary evidence for mining activity in the area dated from the 12th century, and it was likely that limited exploitation had occurred throughout the period leading to the 18th century. Mines at the site were first offered for lease in 1736, and mining operations ceased in 1921, although reprocessing of old spoil tips continued until the 1960s. Four areas were recorded during the survey. Two were surveyed at 1:2500, having previously been sketch surveyed. The remaining two were recorded at 1:200 and 1:50. The 1:2500 survey of the Dowgang Hush area located and recorded a range of features relating to lead and coal mining, including a complex of ponds, leats, shafts and dressing waste tips forming the remains of an early mining and ore-dressing area. These included elements of the complex water-management system which supplied the mines. The survey of the Stamps area recorded an unusual ore-dressing area which had utilised technology rare in a lead-mining context. The standing features of the smelt mill area were dominated by a central spine wall, which carried the flues from the various hearths and furnaces, and retained a range of structural detail. Other features in this area had largely been reduced to low levels by 20th century demolition. Recomendations were made for the future management of the complex, including potential clearance, excavation and consideration for public display. [Au(abr)] |
