Abstract: |
Desk-based study on land proposed for redevelopment of the southern half of The Old George Mall was undertaken. The site was shown to fall into two areas: the west end of the site would probably contain a complex palimpsest of building remains spanning the period from the late medieval to the 19th century; the east end of the site would probably contain a less complex palimpsest of structural remains, with earlier elements, particularly the original Hall at No. 4 New Street preserved below 18th century gardens, but with large areas of modern disturbance and potential for fuel and waste contamination.
