Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to residential development. The site lay on the south side of the present village of Helpringham with the northern boundary c.80m south of the medieval parish church. Archaeological evidence from the prehistoric to modern periods had been identified near the site, but none had previously been recorded from the site itself. Lying at the limit of the medieval settlement of Helpringham suggested that there was moderate potential for Saxon and medieval remains. Three buildings of unknown function were identified on a 1774 plan, providing evidence of some form of activity during the post-medieval period. The potential for prehistoric and Romano-British remains at the site was low. Earthwork remains of ridge and furrow and an undated pond were present on the western part of the site with further earthworks of uncertain form being present on the remainder of the site. Further evaluation by fieldwalking or geophysical surveys would not be possible due to vegetation, overhead cable and metal fences. Earthwork survey would help clarify the surface remains.
