Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment, comprising a desk-based assessment, field visit, and a series of trial trenches was undertaken across the proposed development area. Some evidence for early medieval activity was noted in the vicinity of the proposed development area, including the speculative possibility of the defences of a Saxon 'Burgh' traversing the site. An early focus of settlement was centred on nearby Bondgate. The boundary between Bondgate and the Borough of Darlington probably ran through the site. Part of the site was known to have been cultivated as a market garden in the 19th century. The area was extensively developed in the 19th century, with the construction of new roads and buildings. The site was cleared and levelled in modern times, with the Darlington Inner Ring Road built on the northern edge of the site, and new commercial buildings erected to the south and east. The possibility that archaeological deposits had survived was noted, relating to the early occupation of the town, its subsequent development and the relationship between the Borough and Bondgate. The ground work investigations previously undertaken suggested varying depths of made ground across the area, along with the remains of in situ 19th century buildings. A programme of targeted trial trenching was undertaken to assess the extent, nature and survival of archaeological deposits. No evidence of the possible Anglo-Saxon defensive ditch or medieval settlement was identified. Structural evidence of the 19th century development of the area was found in situ, consisting of brick walls and concrete floors with associated services. The gardens to the rear of properties fronting onto Albion Street were located and brick boundary walls dividing the plots identified. Demolition and levelling layers containing large quantities of rubble were present in all the trenches, which related to the modern levelling of the area prior to establishment of the present car park. Natural subsoil was identified in several trenches. With the exception of a few unstratified sherds of pottery, no evidence for archaeological deposits preceding the 19th century was recovered. There was no recommendation for further archaeological works in advance of development. [Au(abr)] |
