Abstract
Number one Poultry: initial findings
Peter Rowsome
4 - 6
Reports on the results of the initial phase of excavations at the site in the buried Walbrook valley, City of London. The lead-up to the work and evaluations associated with the developer's preliminary groundworks are described. The evaluations led to fuller excavation which uncovered the remains of the church of St Benet Sherehog, medieval streets, and the Great Conduit (part of London's first medieval water supply). Finds included a well-preserved Roman bronze lamp, complete with suspension chains and still containing oil and wick. Future work will be conducted beneath the floor slab of the new building.
The gaps in provision and understanding
Judith Plouviez
A short critique of the main points raised by a CBA report on metal detecting (95/850) and views expressed by Tim Schadla-Hall (see 95/795). The possible resource implications for museums of Schadla-Hall's proposals are highlighted.
Antiquities legislation
Tim Schadla-Hall
Criticises current Treasure Trove legislation and the 1994 Treasure Bill. A radical return to the fundamental principles of the legislation is proposed. It is emphasised that the public must be led to understand the importance of all archaeological discoveries (not just the intrinsically valuable) and be encouraged to report their finds via a proper network, possibly with the offer of a reasonable reward. See also 95/792.
Rescue at the IFA Conference: the state of archaeology as a profession in 1995
Paul Spoerry
Considers issues discussed at a session on the problem of archaeologists' salaries. The results of an IFA survey of pay and conditions were debated. See also 95/763.
Prehistoric burials at Low Hauxley
Describes the discovery of two Bronze Age cist burials on the edge of an eroding cliff near Amble. The cysts were possibly set into a Mesolithic midden. It is reported that further work is being undertaken, including a programme of environmental sampling of the cliff face.
Farm survey at Beanley
Reports the main findings of a survey of the Carr-Ellison Estates farm at Beanley. The evolution of each farm on the estate was investigated, and nationally important evidence of occupation from the Bronze Age to Roman periods was revealed in some parts. Bracken growth is identified as a conservation problem.
Medieval moated farm: excavations at Old Abbey Farm, Cheshire
Reports on the early results of an experimental excavation project. The validity of the excavators' conclusions based on below-ground remains is being tested by reference to the record of the upstanding buildings, which was made by a separate team prior to demolition. Adrian Tindall provides an overview of `Medieval moated sites in Cheshire'.
Rescuing Bristol's medieval past
Reg Jackson
Reports on excavations on the site of the Benedictine Priory Church of St James. Foundations of the destroyed east end of the church, a cemetery, and remains of post-medieval buildings and gardens were uncovered.
