Abstract
Back from the brink: two recent planning cases in Northamptonshire
Sandy Kidd
1 - 2
An account of how the planning system can respond when the archaeological potential of an area becomes apparent only after planning permission has been granted (see also 97/1009). The examples discussed are the Daventry International Rail Terminal (DIRFT) site and a housing development at King's Meadow Lane, Higham Ferrers. The former involved an IA and AS settlement sites and RB field systems; the latter RB and AS settlements.
Betchworth
David Williams
4 - 5
Summarises the evidence for multi-period occupation (Meso/Neo, BA, and RB) revealed by recent excavations in advance of quarrying (which had been ongoing on this site since the 1920's).
The new millennium
Bruce Watson
Peter Hinton
Suggests that the year 2000 should be marked by the publication of a Millennium County Archaeological History of England series, on the lines of the Victoria County Histories, but incorporating the mass of recently acquired archaeological data, and utilising the latest information technology.
ALGAO and the Green Paper
Brief comments on the 1996 government's heritage policy proposals.
Shoring up planning guidance for Wales
Lists a series of Technical Advice Notes (TAN(W)) that were issued along with new planning guidelines by the Welsh Office in late 1996.
In the frame -- a depressing picture of archaeology in the late 1990s
Jean Mellor
Comments on English Heritage's recently published survey of archaeological research frameworks (see 97/183). It is urged that this document should provoke wider debate.
The public's right
Nina Crummy
Highlights the importance of communicating the results of archaeological work to the general public, despite adverse commercial pressures and funding cuts.
Saxon London
A brief report on excavation of a Saxon settlement with clay-&-timber buildings at the Royal Opera House site, Covent Garden.
