Abstract
Slipways and steamchests; the archaeology of 18th- and 19th-century wooden m...
M K Stammers
253 - 264
An overview of the evidence for shipbuilding, looking at the development of the British merchant fleet, the distribution of shipbuilding sites, and the location, size and layout of shipyards. Shipyards are characterised and results are reported of an initial survey of sites in north Wales and north-west England.
La Lavia, La Juliana and the Santa Maria de Vision: three Spanish Armada transports lost off Streedagh Strand, Co Sligo; an interim report
Steven Birch
Doug McElvogue
265 - 276
Describes the wrecks of three merchantmen discovered in 1985 and investigated in 1985 and 1987. The wrecks are particularly important, since they are exactly contemporary and contain potentially intact collection of artillery. Furthermore, the Lavia is identified as an almiranta, or vice flagship, and the Santa Maria de Vision is thought to hold remains of a field hospital.
A breech-loading swivel gun from the Curaç, 1729, wreck site
Doug McElvogue
289 - 291
Describes a bronze gun raised in 1997 from the Dutch warship wrecked off the Isle of Unst, Shetland. It is noted that breech blocks of a similar size were found at the wreck of the De Liefde, on Out Skerries, also in Shetland.
