Abstract
The Mary Rose site -- geophysical evidence for palaeo-scour marks
Rory Quinn
Jonathan M Bull
Justin K Dix
Jonathan R Adams
3 - 16
Reports on a seismic survey using the `Chirp' technique for digital, frequency-modulated sub-bottom profiling. Anomalies were recorded which are interpreted as infilled hollows due to tidal erosion around the wreck. It is concluded that the technique this potentially very useful for non-invasive examination of wreck sites and, thus, of particular value in the protection and management of maritime sites.
Reused medieval ship planks from Westminster, England, possibly derived from a vessel built in the cog style
Damian M Goodburn
26 - 38
Planks from a cesspit lining (dated c. 1270) found during excavations in Parliament Square are identified as reused ship's timbers. The planks are thought to come from trees grown in eastern England and felled in the mid thirteenth century; however, constructional details suggest that the ship was constructed like the cogs associated with Hanseatic League merchants.
Dating military buttons: a second interim report based on artefacts recovered from the 18th-century wreck Invincible between 1979 and 1990
John M Bingeman
Arthur T Mack
39 - 50
Finds from the Solent wreck (which sank in 1758) and other sources indicate that regimental numbered buttons were in regular use well before 1767, the year that most experts believe they were introduced. A catalogue of illustrated buttons is given in `Appendix A' (47--9), and `Appendix B' (49) gives details of the Nutting family of button makers.
