Rescue excavations on a multi-period gravel site five kilometres south-east of St Albans revealed the charred remains of a probable logboat containing cremated human and animal remains. Radiocarbon dating indicated a date in the early fourth millennium BC. The site continued to be used sporadically until the Late Iron Age, and there is some indication that it may have continued to have ritual significance. The excavation also recorded one (possibly two) Early Saxon sunken floor huts, and ovens and ditches associated with medieval Parkbury. Includes separately authored specialist reports on:

Analysis of paint residues and paint equipment from North European shipwrecks together with archival research provides evidence of pigments and colours used. The limitations of pictorial sources and contemporary models are contrasted. Focuses largely on Dutch ships.

The condition of a wooden shipwreck varies considerably according to the nature of the site environment. Each marine site exhibits a unique biodeteriogenic potential influenced by prevailing hydrographic factors. The potential rate of degradation of organic archaeological material can be determined by monitoring the diversity and activity of marine organisms and is important in determining if in situ protection is required. Compares the deteriogenic potential at two marine archaeological sites: a cold water site (Langstone Harbour, UK) and a warm water site (Zakynthos, Greece).
