Reports a field evaluation which discovered two ditches containing a single sherd of IA pottery. A subsequent small area excavation revealed further IA and Early Roman evidence in the form of ditches, pits, postholes and a single crouched inhumation burial. These features are interpreted as representing the northern boundary of a IA/Romano-British settlement which has been identified by previous investigations to the south of the site. Excavation uncovered a mid- to late-first-century AD Roman settlement across the River Itchen from the `small town' of Clausentum (Bitterne Manor). Large quantities of iron slag suggest iron working was a significant activity at the site, probably the manufacture of blooms for use elsewhere. A road line, flanked by ditches was also found. Reports the excavation of a mid-sixth-century grave on a spur just east of Tidworth, which contained the bodies of four male adults, all buried at the same time and accompanied by weapons. The nature, location and date of the grave lead to the interpretation that is was possibly connected with the resurgence of military activity after AD 522. Includes a specialist report on:
