Abstract
Two farms ``held by arrow'' in Bransdale: Loft House and Smout House 1282--1952
Isabel Anne Earl of EUSTON

Historical account of the tenure of two adjacent farmhouses in the Kirkbymoorside area, along with various stories associated with the properties.
Firebreak earthworks on the North York Moors
Basil Wharton
12 - 17
Description of various firebrakes constructed in 1960 to combat moorland fires, along with information of the tactics used; in particular the article looks at the Laskill Pasture Moor--Helmsley Moor firebreak, and its impact on the archaeology of the area; and includes a note on firebreaks north of Piethorne and Bonfield Gill.
The Shepherds' farm at Great Edstone
Lorne Wilkinson
18 - 19
Eyewitness account of a mid-nineteenth-century farm at Great Edstone as it appeared in the 1950s, with a detailed description of its layout, buildings and machinery.
Excavations in Ryedale 2000
Philip A Rahtz
Lorna Watts
19 - 26
Description of three small excavations undertaken in 2000. At Blansby Park, investigations at the site of a late Roman villa were undertaken in order to define its stratification and in the hope of establishing a date range for the site. Excavations at St Gregory's Minster, Kirkdale, were undertaken in advance of drainage work, where evidence of the foundations of the early medieval church was revealed, and the possibility of an earlier, Roman structure nearby is discussed.
A survey of Hood Hill Castle
Ed Dennison
26 - 29
Summary of a detailed earthwork survey of Hood Hill, the site of a castle probably built in the eleventh or twelfth century. The article describes the outer defences, the main area of occupation, and other features, and includes an interpretative discussion.
Cawthorn Camps 2000 -- interim report
Pete R Wilson
Graham Lee
30 - 33
Interim report of excavations aimed at further elucidating the structural sequence and phasing of the Roman forts and providing data to assist in site management, and in particular erosion arising from visitor use. The sequences and features found in the individual trenches are described.
