Abstract
Spittal Rocks and the diver
Grace Simpson
3 - 7
A review of press reports of diving investigations in the 1920s and 1970s and other references relating to the rocks that project into Filey Bay. Observations of possibly Roman remains (including a coin, timbers, and dressed stone blocks) had led to claims that the Spittal was a Roman pier, but the evidence is inconclusive.
Filey Roman signal station
Patrick Ottoway
8 - 10
Reports on the results of a second season of excavations at the site threatened by the erosion of the Carr Naze (see also 97/1691). A possibly post-Roman earthwork was discovered that transected the promontory on the eastern (landward) side of the site.
Burniston's open fields
Chris Evans
35 - 44
Examines an estate survey made in 1724 by John Cossins, looking at the mensuration and ownership of particular land units.
Investigations into a possible prehistoric earthwork at Oliver's Mount, Scarborough
Christopher Hall
Trevor Pearson
45 - 52
Contour survey, resistivity survey, and trial excavations were carried out to identify a possible cross-ridge earthwork described in documents and apparently visible on an aerial photograph. Excavation did not locate the feature.
