An overview of the results of ten years of fieldwork undertaken in the area of the medieval town by the Scarborough Archaeological & Historical Society. Topics considered include: the origins of the town (prior to the foundation of the castle by King Henry II) and the inconclusive evidence of Roman or Viking occupation; the medieval defences; ecclesiastical and secular buildings; the harbour; and the post-medieval town. Some future research priorities are suggested.
