Report on archaeological excavations in 1997 prior to housing development on land at Crowland Road, Haverhill, in the vicinity of which an early church had previously been partially excavated in 1855, and some thirty inhumation burials excavated in 1975. The 1997 excavations revealed part of the churchyard of the former church of St Mary, including over 350 individual burials. The cemetery appears to have been in use from the Late Saxon/early medieval period to the mid-sixteenth century when the associated church became redundant, although there is little artefactual evidence of post-thirteenth- or early-fourteenth-century activity. Early boundaries to the east and north were subsequently infilled and crossed by later burials as the cemetery was enlarged. Burial alignments followed variations on an east/west orientation. Grave finds and coffin furniture were sparse, although at least four higher status coffined burials were identified. Analysis of the human remains indicates that the majority of adults were aged over 45 years at the time of death, although infant and juvenile mortality was high.
