The paper addresses concerns relating to the attribution of `A'-marked porcelain to the Heylyn and Frye 1744 patent, namely uncertainty over the group's chemical and mineralogical coherence; the lack of reliable quantitative glaze analysis; the lack of perceived continuity between `A'-marked wares and the later Bow phosphatic wares; and the problems of identifying the location of the first Heylyn and Frye experimental factory site. The paper presents the results of analysis of bone ash porcelain samples from the excavation of William Reid's factory at Brownlow Hill, and compares them with similar porcelains from elsewhere.

The paper sets out a suggested chronology for the development and dating of different shapes and changes in paste, glaze and decorative idioms at the Vauxhall China Works during its period of production from 1751 to 1764. After giving a brief overview of the factory and its production and an explanation of the criteria for the chronology, the author proposes a classification of an Early Period of 1752--54; a Middle Period of c. 1755--60; and a Later Period of c. 1760--64, and describes the characteristics of each.
