Abstract
Analytical study of composite shot from the Mary Rose
Robert Walker
Richard Dunham
Alexzandra Hildred
Margaret After Rule
84 - 90
Metallographic examination showed that the shot had been produced by pouring lead into moulds, each containing a wrought iron cube whose corners tend to protrude through the lead. The shot would have had increased drag and reduced range, but had compensating features.
An unusual wrought iron artefact: the Pearsall Gate lattice grid construction at Willsbridge Mill, Bitton, Avon: early 19th century
Malcolm T Tucker
90 - 91
Dr Percy and his metallurgical collection
Sue Cackett
92 - 98
John Percy (1817-89), the noted metallurgist, was an insatiable collector of all kinds of samples, from fuel to experimental metals. Of his 4200 samples over 3700 are lodged in the Science Museum, constituting a unique record of British metallurgy of the second half of the 19th century. A few earlier and non-British items are also in the collection.
Water power and cylinder blowing in early South Wales coke ironworks
Laurence Ince
108 - 112
Short discussion and list of blowing arrangements at eighteen works, 1757-1800.
The Historical Metallurgy Society in retrospect
Richard Doncaster
112 - 113
The Society was formed in 1963 out of a concern for the preservation of early industrial metalworking sites. A list of its annual conferences is appended.
Tin smelting at Week Ford, Dartmoor: a brief note
Bryan Earl
119
Preliminary details of a site where smelting operations were carried on for a thousand years from about AD 700. A section of refuse tail has yielded useful information including material for a 14C date in 6th-9th century AD (cal, 2 sigma).
Early coke ovens: a note
David Cranstone
120 - 122
Brief details of 18th century examples at Dolgun (Gwynedd), Newcastle upon Tyne Maryport, Norwich, the Sheffield area, and Fountains Fell Malham. Most are of front-loading beehive form, but more examples are needed before the history of the type can be written.
