Investigates the possibility of a coherent description of long-term change on an archaeological timescale. An earlier (`processualist') ecology-based synthesis is rejected, but a post-modernist approach is also avoided by the assertion of the continuing value of a `grand narrative'. The importance of social interaction and cultural encounter is emphasised over autonomous development, particularly in relation to the `Neolithic', `Urban', and `Industrial' Revolutions.

Drawing on evidence from Funnel-necked Beaker culture long barrows of northern Europe, this paper attempts to reconstruct aspects of social organisation from the material traces of ritual activity associated with the construction of the barrows.

Compares and contrasts the depictions of female and male subjects in mosaics and considers the findings in the light of the feminist theories of Sherry Ortner. Women are often shown either as non-specific allegorical characters without personalities, or as personifications of natural forces (such as Medusa). Male figures are frequently used to contrast culture and nature (Bacchus), and, while there are many scenes representing male-orientated activities, activities of specifically female interest are not known.

Begins by underlining the existence in Europe two opposing views of the role of archaeology: the `Anglo-American' and the `Mediterranean'. The organisation of archaeology specifically in Spain is analysed in the `Mediterranean' context. The role of European institutions such as the EU and European Association of Archaeologists is examined and there is seen to be a need for increased integration (that is respectful of national feelings).
