Abstract
Book review essay; the history of social hierarchies
Stephen J Shennan
89 - 97
Michael W Diehl (ed), Hierarchies in Action: Cui Bono? (2000, Center for Archaeological Investigations, S Illinois University, Occas Pap 27), Jonathan Hass (ed), From Leaders to Rulers (2001, Kluwer), and W G Runciman (ed), The Origin of Human Social Institutions (2001, British Academy) are reviewed. The three volumes are seen to have a Darwinian perspective and therefore to be exemplars of the need for the application of well-founded theory to the `archives of facts' that underlie the archaeological study of prehistoric societies.
