Abstract
Kew Palace; a seventeenth-century villa rediscovered
Lee Prosser
7 - 30
Extensive repair and re-presentation of Kew Palace has led to the discovery and identification of significant elements of the seventeenth-century fabric of the original villa constructed for Samuel Fortrey, particularly the lost original staircase, the decorative scheme and the early plan-form of the building. By illustrating these discoveries, the article seeks a reassessment of the building in a wider context.
Pedestal stairs in eighteenth-century Britain
Richard Hewlings
53 - 68
The article draws attention to a small number of stairs in Britain from the eighteenth century which resemble those of the previous century in having closed strings, identical plump vase-shaped balusters, massive newels styled as pedestals rather than columns, and broad deep handrails.
Jacob Schnebbelie, draughtsman to the Society of Antiquaries (1760--92), and the politics of preservation in late eighteenth century England
Matthew M Reeve
69 - 86
The paper explores the relationship of the draughtsman and antiquary Jacob Schnebbelie with the Society of Antiquaries from c. 1786 to his death in 1792, and particularly with the Director, Richard Gough. It goes on to consider Schnebbelie's preservationist intentions at Salisbury Cathedral, where he recorded the thirteenth-century vault paintings before they were whitewashed in 1791, and also the polarised opinions on the preservation of ancient monuments at this time, and concludes by discussing Schnebbelie's role in the development of antiquarian studies in late-eighteenth-century England.
A brief history of the Friends of Friendless Churches
Caroline Carr
87 - 104
The article looks at the factors leading to the establishment of the Friends of Friendless Churches in 1957, and at their early work, including their special agreement with Cadw and the Church in Wales to care for redundant Welsh churches. Details of all the churches and chapels owned by the Friends are presented in
Appendix One: redundant churches and chapels owned by the Friend...
98 - 101
Appendix Two: redundant churches owned by the Friends of Friendl...
101 - 103
The Society's casework in 2005: review of selected cases
Matthew Saunders
113 - 134
The author discusses some of the most interesting applications for listed building consent on which the Ancient Monuments Society was consulted during 2005.
