Mineral magnetic investigations of sediment cores and catchment materials from Llyn Geirionydd form the basis of a study of Holocene sediment yields and deposition patterns. Catchment soils and bedrock materials are highly variable in magnetic concentration. In contrast, the lake sediments are more homogenous in magnetic concentration. Magnetic hysteresis properties of catchment materials, bulk sediments and magnetic extracts demonstrate that the occurrence of authigenic greigite (Fe3S4) in early Holocene sediments is responsible for differences between the magnetic characteristics of sediments older than 5,000BP, and the more recent sediments and catchment materials. A whole-lake stratigraphy based on core correlation using magnetic measurements, pollen stratigraphy and 14C age determinations indicates sediment yields which increase almost threefold from the early Holocene to the period from c AD~500-1850.
Towards a tephrochronology for the Holocene of the north of Ireland

Discrete layers of tephra have been found in both raised and blanket bogs in Ireland. Some layers have been provenanced to Iceland, and in two cases specific eruptions of known radiocarbon age are suggested. Nine layers spanning the Holocene are replicated in three lowland raised bogs. One of the major layers has also been identified at a number of sites in two seperate upland blanket peat systems and in a lake sediment.
Icelandic volcanic ash and the mid-Holocene Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen decline in northern Scotland

A volcanic ash-layer in peat from northern Scotland has been identified and coincides exactly with an abrupt decline in Scots Pine pollen frequencies. This provides an isochrone (time-equivalent marker horizon) with which to investigate the timing of the Holocene `pine-decline'. Furthermore, two possible causes of the southward shift of the range of pinus in Scotland c 4,000BP are suggested; a direct effect of acid pollution by chemicals produced by the eruption of Hekla, or a volcanically induced climatic perturbation. These possibilities have wider implications for the influence of volcanos on postglacial environmental change.
