The five houses, at Woodall, Cawthorne, Thorpe Common, Harley Hall, and Brampton Hall, reflect diversity in plan form and carpentry styles, and date between late 14th and 16th centuries. A list of S Yorks dendrochronological determinations is given. For some fifty years three styles overlapped: the 'Highland' (with kingpost roof), the 'Lowland' (with common rafters) and the cruck frames which were in the west of the county by early 16th.
