Abstract
Chester city walls restoration
Simon W Ward
4 - 5
Work on the East Wall north of medieval Kaleyard Gate revealed post-medieval masonry from the nearby Saddlers Tower, the Roman rampart, Roman gutter stones, and RB roofing tile including stamped pieces and two antefix fragments. Brief details of the rebuilding technique are given.
Roman communications in West Cheshire
K E Jermy
6 - 7
Following a recent article concerning RB settlement on the Wirral (see 94/453) the question of communications routes is tackled by this paper. It is thought possible that waterborne transport was used between sites in the area.
The Congleton hoards: four hoards of Tudor and Stuart silver coins from Congleton
Adrian S Tindall
8 - 12
A report on the four hoards, incorporating detailed analyses of the coins themselves, the historical background and the pottery vessels that they were discovered in. Initials on the pottery and subsequent research may have identified the owner of the hoards as one John Walker. There is some speculation as to the date and reason for the deposition.
St Lawrence's, Denton: a survey of a sixteenth century timber chapel
Tom Burke
13 - 19
The historical background to the original construction and later alteration of the church is provided prior to the yield of the 1993 building survey. Aspects of the original sixteenth-century church, including the timber-framed nave, remain.
The Hodge Print Works, Broadbottom: a site of the Industrial Revolution in the Etherow Valley
Michael D Nevell
20 - 25
The development of this industrial site is chronicled from the initial eighteenth-century woollen mill, through the early nineteenth-century cotton spinning mill and bleachworks, to the beginnings of printing in the 1820s. The surviving remains are surveyed. These include the woollen mill foundations, Hodge Cottage, bleaching baths, Summerbottom cottages and Hodge Hall. The juxtaposition of works and workers' housing is typical of industrial communities of this kind, and the whole is thought to contribute to a greater understanding of urbanisation and industrialisation in the area.
