Abstract
A recent group of Twentieth Legion tiles from Tarbock, Merseyside
Robert A Philpott
8 - 10
Summarises the results of excavation of a Romano-British enclosure which, despite having no other obvious military connection, produced six legionary stamped tiles. Four are examples of a rare consular date stamp and two are of `LXXVV'. The significance of these finds for the interpretation of the site is considered and other legionary tile finds from the North West are discussed. The tiles were possibly part of a shipment from the Holt factory but the hypothesis that they are of more local manufacture is to be tested.
Rainsough: a Romano-British site in the Irwell Valley
Michael D Nevell
11 - 15
A study of unstratified finds recovered during an earlier campaign of fieldwork on the site of a now partially destroyed hillfort (Rainsough Hill camp). The assemblage comprised Romano-British and late prehistoric pottery with a small quantity of tile, glass, metalwork, and a stone brass-casting crucible. There is reason to believe that the material was redeposited during quarrying which destroyed the fort earthwork. Interpretation of the site's function is uncertain.
Timperley Old Hall: a report on the fifth season of excavations
Pat Faulkner
16 - 18
Summarises background knowledge of the site and reports on the fifth season of excavations at the Stuart hall and medieval moated site, which produced evidence of Anglo-Saxon activity in the form of ephemeral structures and hearths. Calibrated radiocarbon dates of AD1258--1436, AD1189--1335, and AD797--1020 were obtained. Future investigation of the landscape around the site is proposed.
An investigation into iron smelting furnaces at Castleshaw: interim statement
Norman Redhead
19 - 25
Reports on a survey of the site and excavation of two medieval furnaces. The results are compared to those of an excavation by Ammon Wrigley in the early 1900s.
A 13th century tide mill at Hackensall, Lancashire
Mary C Higham
26 - 27
Summarises documentary and map-based research which identifies the site of a mill belonging to Geoffrey de Hackensall in the thirteenth century. The operation of tide mills is briefly described.
New light on Kirkham Roman Fort
Katharine M Buxton
Reports on excavation of the Roman military site on Windmill Hill, which uncovered a complex site with two or three Roman installations, a possible signal tower, and extramural industrial activity. The earliest features are thought to be three parallel ditches at the south of the site. Evidence for a cavalry presence is cited.
Second Roman fort found intact at Middlewich
Adrian S Tindall
The complete plan of the fort was revealed by a resistivity survey on the northern fringe of the settlement of Salinae. Evaluation has confirmed that it is a Roman military site with two or more phases of defence and permanent internal structures. The site has been scheduled.
