Documents archaeological work which revealed multi-period activity on the site. A large pit and two linear gullies containing substantial amount of Roman pottery were located. Various medieval and post-medieval pits were found, many of which were rubbish pits which included a range of pottery and a large amount of clay pipes. Some of the pits were stone lined and one was timber lined.
The archaeology of Manchester Airport's second runway
Anne Thompson
6 - 7
Reports the excavation of an important Bronze Age site including at least two roundhouses, a scatter of pits and a long linear hollow, thought to be a trackway. Artefacts included collared urn and pygmy cup sherds, while environmental evidence included charred hazelnuts from the hearth of one of the roundhouses. Mesolithic flints attest to earlier activity at the site.

Paul A Holder
10 - 14
Documents the discovery of a metal Roman military diploma on the foreshore at Ravenglass, Cumbria. The exact date is provided by the naming of Sex. Sulpicius Tertullus and Q. Tineius Sacerdos who were the original consuls of AD 158.
Excavations at Astley Hall walled garden, Chorley, 1998
Nick J Hair
Richard Newman
15 - 17
The excavation revealed various features in the garden of the late-sixteenth- to seventeenth-century hall in Lancashire, including a medieval pit which was truncated by a post-medieval ditch. The ditch seems likely to have been dug around the time of the erection of the hall and is suggested to have possibly been used for drainage.

Michael D Nevell

Describes an archaeological landscape research project that is studying the buildings of Warburton, Greater Manchester. The project has four main research themes; the archaeology of the parish church; the archaeology of the village; the landscape archaeology and history of the township; and the vernacular buildings of the town.
