Archaeological science - past achievements and future prospects

Text of inaugural lecture given by the recently appointed Edward Hall Chair of Archaeological Science at the University of Oxford. Explores the meaning of the term archaeological science. The achievements, limitations and future prospects for physical dating methods, artefact studies and the study of man and his environment, representing three of the prime areas of archaeological science, are then considered. Finally, some of the general problem areas that will need to be tackled in the future, together with Oxford's intended contribution to solving these problems, are discussed.

Reviews the role of ESR dating of tooth enamel, which, together with the related technique of thermoluminescence dating of burnt flint, has made a great impact on the chronology of the origin and early evolution of modern Homo sapiens. The results so far obtained for fossil hominid sites relevant to the origin of modern humans in Europe, the Middle East and Africa are described.
