Outlines parameters (such as temper and firing temperature) that determine the strength, toughness and thermal shock resistance of brittle clay ceramics. Uses tests to demonstrate that by using different parameters the resulting ceramic will have different functional properties. Argues that an understanding of the requirements for pottery provides a valuable baseline for the consideration of the overall reasons behind the technological choices associated with their production.
