Abstract
The potential of holography and optical contouring for archaeometry
R B Owen
P D Sheets
13 - 25
Offers experimental assessment of two optical technologies which have important potential applications in archaeology. Holography can record complete optical information about an object, while optical contouring provides an object image overlaid with an analytical topographical pattern which can be used to measure shape. Holography provides a method of image storage and detailed measurement, but is expensive to apply. Optical contouring is less expensive and is quite straightforward but does not have the versatility of holography. Au (abr)
Multivariate analysis of data on glass compositions: a methodological note
Michael J Baxter
45 - 53
Principal components and cluster analysis are sometimes used to classify glass specimens on the basis of their chemical composition. This paper examines a variety of approaches designed to overcome criticisms of the more usual approaches. Au (much abr)
Ice-core acidity peaks, retarded tree growth and putative eruptions
D M Pyle
88 - 91
Counsels caution in ascribing certain ice-core and tree-ring events to the Minoan eruption of Santorini, since historical eruption rates imply that the Minoan was only one of 45 eruptions during 1675-1525 BC which could have caused similar effects. Au (much abr)
The Oxford accelerator mass-spectrometry facility: technical developments in routine dating
Robert E M Hedges
I A Law
Christopher Bronk-Ramsey
Rupert A Housley
99 - 113
Discusses samples and sampling; chemical pre-treatment; target preparation; isotope measurement; accuracy, date calculation, and calibration. Samples are also considered from the submitter's point of view. Includes full discussion of sources of error. Au (abr)
Luminescence dating: a guide for non-specialists
Martin J Aitken
147 - 159
On the principles of TL dating of pottery and of its extension to burnt flint, unburnt calcite and unburnt sediment, and on optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) for sediments.
The abuse of bone analyses for archaeological dietary studies
Ronald G V Hancock
M D Grynpas
K P H Pritzker
169 - 179
Demonstrates, with reference to analytical data for 'clean' modern bones, Egyptian mummy bones, monkey bones, soil-buried bones, etc, that the concentrations of many elements in archaeological bone bear minimal resemblance to their concentrations in 'clean' living bone. It follows that trace elements cannot be used for dietary assessment.
