It is suggested that the customs of submitting prestige gravegoods during the Neolithic, BA, and IA consistently reflect a pluralistic soul idea with a free soul aimed for the next existence.

Reviews the current evidence for plant use in Mesolithic Europe and summarizes its implications.

The Newgrange passage tomb is examined for evidence of `Neolithic science'. A new analysis of the tomb's structure reveals that it was based on a simple geometric shape measurable by a 13.1m unit of length. The locations of particular decoration/motifs are shown to conform to the spatial relationships evident in the tomb's form and defined in terms of oppositions. Reference is also made to art/symbols in the neighbouring passage tomb at Knowth. The features are interpreted as the elaboration of elements common to the passage tomb tradition rather than a specifically scientific discourse.

Excavations between 1990 and 1992 have produced important information on the date and development of the complex between 3000--2000BC. In particular a timber circle of 2000BC, two penannular ring-ditches and a section across the cursus monument were excavated. A radiocarbon sequence has been obtained. The results of the excavations are described and the forms, dates, functions, and reconstruction of timber circles discussed. A corpus of and chronology for timber circles is presented. Specialist reports are detailed on microfiche.

Questions whether the current model of hillforts as central places for the control and redistribution of goods in IA Britain is appropriate via consideration of production and distribution of pottery and salt in ceramic containers. Suitable data found in published reports of excavations from all parts of Britain are considered, if available, and the information is synthesized by defined region and broad phase.

A paper questioning whether the faunal and material remains from the Newgrange excavations are domestic refuse. The deposition and spatial patterning of the faunal material is interpreted as having a ritual significance and the use of this material as representative of the Late Neo/Beaker economy is rejected.
