Abstract
The Pict's Knowe -- a waterlogged henge
Julian Thomas
1 - 2
Reports briefly on excavations carried out on a site threatened by rabbit burrowing. Waterlogged conditions in the peat-filled ditch afforded a rare oportunity to examine an assemblage of organic artefacts and ecofacts associated with a henge -- including leaves, turves, seeds, fruit stones, woodworking debris, wickerwork hurdles, and a simple ard (possibly the earliest plough from north of the Alps). The surface of the entrance causeway was also well preserved, allowing investigation of several stakeholes and slot features.
Pathways to world prehistory
David R Harris
3 - 4
The author reflects on some of the main points of his Presidential Address, given in early 1994. This considered the potential role of the Prehistoric Society in fostering, through its Proceedings, a more global approach to the study of prehistory and a greater appreciation of the subject's relevance in the modern world.
`Childe in History'
John J Wilkes
5 - 6
A review of a lecture by Peter Gathercole, which discussed the life and work of Vere Gordon Childe.
An Corran rock shelter, Skye: a major new Mesolithic site
Alan Saville
Roger F Miket
9 - 10
Reports the discovery of a Mesolithic shell midden during salvage excavations. Organic preservation was good, leading to the preservation of abundant faunal bone (including some human fragments). As well as a collection of bone and antler tools that included `Obanian' types, a classic lithic assemblage was recovered. A radiocarbon date has suggested a range of 6551--6188~BC.
Grooved Ware in context
10 - 11
A review of papers presented at the February 1994 meeting of the Neolithic Studies Group, which discussed various aspects of the study of this distinctively decorated pottery type.
Tales of the northern frontier: some aspects of the Belgian Lateglacial
Ruth Charles
12 - 13
Reports on a general re-evaluation of faunal assemblages that is nearing conclusion. The study looked at several assemblages (many not published) to establish the species composition, examine them for modification (such as butchery marks), and address various problems of archaeological definition and chronology.
Pincevent: a Magdalenian campsite of nomadic hunters during the autumnal migrations of reindeer herds
Sylvie Ploux
14 - 15
A review of research conducted since the discovery of the site in 1964. The report summarises evidence for seasonal occupation and exploitation of reindeer, and for archaeological structures that are respectively interpreted as habitation units and technological areas. The techniques employed for analysis include refitting of artefacts, micromorphological studies, and experimental examination hearths. Studies of flint knapping technology have also revealed signs of social distinctions within groups.
Where are they now?
Jill Cook
Roger M Jacobi
Laments the disappearance of catalogues compiled by Benjamin Harrison (the nineteenth-century archaeologist and excavator of the Oldbury Palaeolithic site). One notebook has recently come to light in a local society collection, and there is an appeal for information on the whereabouts of further documents. See also 96/16.
Recent finds of Grooved Ware by Wessex Archaeology
Rosamund M J Cleal
Reports that the late Neolithic pottery had been found on seven of the unit's excavations in the preceding year. It is observed that this rapid increase in find spots is apprently a general trend, and there is news of forthcoming publications.
