Abstract
The thirteenth century effigy of a lady in East Coker church
Brian Gittos
Moira Gittos
36 - 37
Describes a badly damaged effigy fashioned in Purbeck marble, dated on stylistic grounds to the thirteenth century. It is conjectured that the woman may have been a member of the de Coker or de Mandeville families, although this cannot be confirmed.
The surviving Anglo-Saxon fabric of East Coker church
Brian Gittos
Moira Gittos
58 - 59
Survey of the west end of the church describes features in keeping with Anglo-Saxon design and construction. If this can be confirmed by expert opinion, it will be the only surviving AS west front in Somerset.
A mediaeval site in East Coker
Brian Gittos
Moira Gittos
60 - 63
The evidence from two previously excavated sites -- Slades Paddock and Finchingfield -- is here brought together and interpreted on the basis of foundation and artefactual data as representing a high status medieval house, defunct by the late seventeenth century. Finds included window-lead, a dagger, buckle, lead alloy spoon, and part of a Purbeck stone mortar.
