Abstract
Field monuments and planning control
Tom Carey
32 - 33
A senior Officer of Kerry County Council outlines the role of the Planning Authority in the context of the preservation of historic sites and monuments. The legal framework, defined by various Planning Acts (from 1963 onwards), and the National Monuments Acts (1930 & 1954) are explained with reference to the relevant contents of an August 1972 circular from the (then) Department of Local Government. The importance of the County Development Plan is highlighted as the primary benchmark against which planning applications are assessed. The Plan contains the county conservation statement which states that the Planning Authority should seek to preserve important archaeological remains and seek the advice of the Kerry Historic Monuments Committee (see also 93/8). A final section describes the Sites and Monuments Record for County Kerry.

Isabel Bennett
