SM 848335. Unusually, the orthostats had been set into a large pit. Slight traces of a passage remained on the NW side; the extent of the former mound could not be traced. A plain pot and some cremated bones were the sole associated finds. These apparently Early Neo small, simple polygonal tombs with short passages are found along the entire Atlantic seaboard.

ST 433903. The barrow which yielded a dagger of Wessex type in 1860 was re-excavated owing to plough damage and its structure clarified. Two ditches suggest a two-phase monument, kerbstones being set up in the second phase. Disturbances had destroyed evidence of primary/secondary burials. The flint is local, not imported as suggested in 1860. Specialist reports are provided on flints, soils, and Roman material from a late disturbance.

From a comprehensive restudy of old finds several items are here reported. The stave is from a tub; others (not preserved) were reported from a well lined with a cut-down barrel, of which nearly 50 other examples are mapped in Roman NW Europe (all near river ports) and discussed in terms of the busy wine trade they must represent. Also treated are eight stamped handles from oil amphorae, a fragment of tent-leather, a boar's tusk ornament (military or civil?) and some late Roman beads. Finally the late barracks, one cavalry and one infantry, are illustrated.
