Limited rescue excavations on a heavily ploughed site uncovered part of a settlement occupied from late 1st to early 4th centuries AD. Ditches, pits, postholes, rubble spreads, a shallow ?well, and associated timber building were attested, together with a substantial assemblage of box-flue tiles and a useful quantity of animal bones. Burials of the hospital cemetery were found on the Carnation Nursery site but no clear evidence of buildings emerged from test pits and watching brief.

A pair of Wealden houses at 160-166 High Street, an adjacent timber-framed building, and associated stratigraphy are described and placed in the context of med buildings in Essex and the med topography of Maldon. Au

The only surviving pre-1600 house of a small copyhold farming unit consists of a late 15th/early 16th century crosswing and a hall/service block renovated early in 17th. The crosswing was extended and an outshot added to the main block in the second half of 18th century. Full documentation from late 16th allows close correlation with the fabric evidence. Au (abr)
