Abstract
Preliminary report: the Romano-British settlement at Chelmsford, Essex: Caesaromagos
Paul J Drury
3 - 29
[TL 7006]. Excavation and observation from 1969 to 1971 have indicated pre-Flavian military occupation, together with an early timber building complex succeeded after c AD 60 by a probable mansio. An "artisan and trading settlement" of c 8ha developed from c 60-65 onwards, on two main roads. The temple site, described in greater detail, had its origins in a prehistoric earthwork; a later ditched enclosure was succeeded c 65-75 by a shrine complex of partly-open timber structures and ancillary features. An octagonal Romano-Celtic temple was constructed c 320-25, and continued in use until early 5th century; sub-Roman and possibly Germanic occupation followed. The site was re-occupied briefly during 13th century probably as part of a dyer's establishment. Au

TL 383009. Rescue excavations were carried out in the Grange Yard of the monastic home farm of the Augustinian Abbey and in an outer monastic close. Twelve medieval and two post-medieval buildings covering the period c 1200-1600 were investigated, and include an aisled hall, a 12-bay barn, a dock and wharf, haybarn, stalled brick building with solar end, three successive entrance lodges and a forge. Finds included medieval and post-medieval pottery (large early 16th century group), bricks from c 1200, objects of bone, bronze, lead and iron, and the share beam and stilt of a 15th century oak plough. The buildings are compared with those listed in the Dissolution Inventory and those shown on a map of c 1600. Discussion is included of the economic development of the 1200-acre farm. Au(abr)
