The structural history of the `earliest surviving English breakwater' is discussed, illustrating the complicated crossover between vernacular and non-vernacular building methods.

Considers the development of timber building techniques in the county, based on an overview of the evidence derived from surviving medieval roofs and walls (excluding churches and crucks).

Discusses the results of a dendrochronological programme commissioned by the RCAHMW to date a representative sample of medieval, largely timber-built, domestic buildings (see also 98/1167 ).

Reports on an archaeological survey of the building, undertaken prior to its demolition. Access was restricted due to the dilapidated condition of the property. Fixtures and fittings were recorded, and there is a report on `Building material' by Ken Sabel (43--4).

Analyses an earlier timber structure, encased in a seventeenth-century brick and pantile exterior of the house. Both medieval and post-medieval features are present in the original structure, but comparison with a similar, dated house in Knaresborough suggests that Upper Farm was built before c 1516.

Describes 42 Chesil Street, which was recently discovered to be an example of a rare type of timber building and has been tree-ring dated to 1292/93. Includes `Observations on an English medieval roof incorporating under-rafters (sous-chevrons)' by J-C Bans & P Bans (67--8) and a `Footnote' by P Smith (68), which reflect on the evidence for links between English and French carpentry in the thirteenth century (see also 98/1777.)
