Reviews the documented history of the fort together with archaeological evidence derived from a programme of survey and excavation undertaken in advance of conservation and restoration of the gun positions on the seaward battery wall during 1993, 1994 and 1996.

Considers a number of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century `clearance groups' -- closed assemblages of domestic artefacts discarded as a single deposit -- recently excavated in the London area. Particular attention is paid to a fine assemblage of pottery, glass, and clay tobacco pipes from the site of the King's Arms, Uxbridge, deposited c 1785--1800. Comparison is made with clearance deposits from other victualling establishments and households in London, Guildford, Leicester, and the American colonies.
