TQ 334289. The remains of a 16th and 17th century forge and an 18th century fulling mill were excavated. The centre of industrial activity lay between two parallel water channels 9m apart. The forge, of which little survived apart from the anvil base and some wooden foundations, had used wheels in both channels, driving the power hammer and the bellows for the hearths. Fulling, carried out in a simple T-shaped shed, required one wheel only. The site went out of use c 1750. Au(abr)

The process is shown to have been a German invention of late 16th century. After a survey of its early history and introduction into England, the different types of cementation furnace are described, some remaining in use into 20th century. Au(abrd). Unusually detailed rebuilding accounts of 1534 relating to one of Andover's two principal inns show the complex organization necessary to construct a large timber-framed building and the sources of most of the building materials. Au(abr)

TM 808346. Excavation of a threatened medieval site revealed the complex arrangements made in 19th century for sewage disposal before the introduction of water closets and a septic tank. Cesspools of clay and brick, as well as manuring pits, were excavated. Au

Eight plaster-of-paris tiles with erotic scenes in relief decoration were found behind the chimney breast of an upper floor room at 145 Fleet Street. They are illustrated, described and set in their mid-18th century art historical context. The building is said to date from just after the Great Fire but no evidence was found to support this.
