Abstract
Fishbourne revisited: the site in its context
Barry Cunliffe
160 - 169
Thirty years after excavations began and twenty years after the results were published the site is re-evaluated. Speculation about a link between activity during the `proto-palace' period 1c (c AD 65-75), period 2 when the ten acre palace was in existence (c AD 80-100) and the client king Cogidubnus had previously been ultimately discounted on the basis of incompatible dating evidence. However, a further survey of this evidence, along with a consideration of social developments during the first century AD has led to the conclusion that whilst no link is proven, one is certainly possible. There is an appendix on `Excavations at Fishbourne 1969-1989' (167-8).
