Abstract
`At Gretland Greetland in the toppe of an hill': four hundred years of the Roman altar, 1597--1997
Donald Haigh
13 - 35
Discusses an inscribed stone altar found in 1597, drawing on antiquarian accounts and recent field research (including inconclusive resistivity survey). The find has implications for the possible location of Cambodunum, a place recorded in the Antonine Itinerary as lying between Calcaria (Tadcaster) and Mamucium (Manchester).
Wakefield manor copyholders through six centuries: the Patchetts of Warley 1350--1900
John H Patchett
36 - 53
The history of the family is traced using an almost unbroken series of Wakefield Court Rolls. The Patchetts' manorial holdings in the townships of Warley, Sowerby and Soyland are discussed -- particularly those at Cold Edge, Upper Saltonstall, Luddenden, and Low Hill (Southowram).
Iron and wool: ironworking and the woolen textile industry in Calderdale from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution
J A Heginbottom
54 - 65
Argues that the existence of a significant iron industry in the locality was a major contributing factor in the success of the nationally important woolen industry in Halifax. Known bloomery sites are listed, and the ironwork products essential to the woolen industry are discussed.
Poverty, health and social welfare: the history of the Halifax Union Workhouse and St John's Hospital, 1834--1972
J G Washington
