Abstract
Digging for lepers
Amanda Clarke
4 - 11
A summary report on excavations at the site of the medieval leper hospital of St Nicholas (and see 94/1677). A sequence of buildings began in the eleventh or twelfth century and included the aisled hospital. The building was demolished in the fifteenth century. Documentary evidence is also discussed.
Documentary research
Christopher Daniell
12 - 16
Collates documentary references to the hospital site and its landholdings. Includes a note that the twelfth-century door of St Nicholas' church was removed and now survives in St Margaret's Walmgate.
Pieces of times past
Charlotte Talmage-Smith
17 - 21
Describes and discusses the fragments of five slate clock faces found in relatively modern debris layers. One near complete example is identified as the work of nineteenth-century clockmakers Barber and North and the history of the trade in York is outlined. The clock faces are thought to have been from a turret clock of a minor public building which was probably brought to the site to be broken up for scrap.
The search for the Lawrence Street lepers
Amanda Clarke
22 - 23
Notes the evidence of a recent evaluation and watching brief which located human remains which are thought to indicate the site of the lepers' cemetery (see also 94/1645). Some medieval architectural fragments were also found.
Documentary evidence for burial practices in hospitals
Christopher Daniell
24 - 26
Evidence from bequests and wills is discussed, with reference to York's four hospitals.
Filey Roman signal station
Patrick Ottoway
27 - 36
Summarising previous investigation of the site and noting the threat from erosion, this article reports the 1993 excavations. These revealed new information about the topography of Carr Naze, the structure, layout and occupation of the signal station and the post-Roman history of the site. The pottery assemblage associated with the occupation is dated to the late-fourth or early-fifth century AD.
