A substantial re-assessment of the site which commences with a summary of the development of church archaeology in the City and chronologies of the various investigations. The re-assessed sequence of development on the St Bride's site is described and details of the more significant finds are reported. These include: the `Coins' by J Hall (51); `Dating the stratified pottery' by J Groves & L Blackmore (51--3); `Unstratified Roman pottery' by J Groves (53); `Roman amphora stamp' by F Grew & P Funari (54); `Stratified pottery, fifth to seventeenth century' (54--7) and `Unstratified pottery, eleventh to eighteenth century' (57--8), both by L Blackmore. `Ceramic building material' by I Betts (60--8) includes details of significant assemblages of medieval floor tiles and an in situ pavement, and over one hundred examples of `Worked stone', principally of twelfth to fifteenth-century date, are detailed by M Samuel (69--81). A Wilson reports a `Medieval painted vault rib' (81--2), whilst part of the earliest font yet found in the City is reported by S Semple (82--3). Fragments of `Medieval grave covers' are detailed by T Rutledge & G Milne (83--4), `Arms of the Haberdashers' Company' are reported by G Milne & M Samuel (84--5). A `Possible tomb fragment' by M Samuel (85--6), and notes on `Mortar samples' by N Davey (ed G Milne) (86) and `Window glass' by J D Shepherd (87--8) conclude this section. Ten `Medieval burials' are described by J E Bowman (89--92), and an account of an eleventh-century `Burial of a premature baby' is provided by D Sklar (92--3). This is followed by the `Documented skeletal collection' by J E Bowman (93--5) together with a bibliography of `Work based on the human skeletons' compiled by J E Bowman (95--6). `Appendix 1: Archaeological material on display at St. Bride's church, 1995' by C Harrison & G Milne (115--16), `Appendix 2: list of rectors and vicars' (117), a bibliography (118--21), and an index (122--7) conclude proceedings. |
