Excavations at the site between 1977 and 1987 and previous work on the known history of Ebony (see 86/842) are reported. No standing remains of medieval church or its successor were found. Excavations revealed foundations of a Norman nave and straight-ended chancel, medieval additions of possibly fourteenth or fifteenth century date, the construction of the late-fifteenth--early-sixteenth-century tower, and the small sixteenth-century Chapel of St Anne. The fire of c1560 destroyed the church. The Elizabethan church, constructed c1570, was demolished in 1858 leaving only the robbed out trenches of the former structure. Thus, a reconstruction of its plan can only be undertaken using illustrative and excavation plan evidence. The possible location of Ebony and reasons for its demise are also discussed. There are reports on `The coins' by Marion M Archibald (64--6), painted glass, some early medieval pottery and later green-glazed ware, and stone and tile objects.

Concludes the grave inventory and provides an osteoarchaeological report in `Appendix I: osteoarchaeological report' by Rosemary Barnacle, José Gibbs & Linda Hammond (101--6). The site has been scheduled by EH but not to the extent that it would be protected from further plough damage. Work in the area in the nineteenth century is presented in tabulated form in `Appendix II: tabulated data from all excavations' (106--20). Notes a hoard of forty silver coins discovered in a tin in a cupboard in Sandwich Guildhall and found, by the British Museum, to date between 1180 and 1242. With them was a manuscript note dated to 1882 detailing their discovery.

Re-discovered in 1843 when part of the bank of the river Medway -- to which it is adjacent -- collapsed, initial work at the site, along with activity in response to construction threats to the site from 1970 to date is presented. Three phases of building activity are isolated. Finds include coins, small finds including copper alloy objects and bone objects, antler working debris, pottery, and unstratified post-medieval finds. Finally, `Appendix A: The Mount villa, Maidstone: the evidence of the Roman pottery for trade and the economy' by Richard Pollard (232--4), and `Appendix B: quantification table by EVES of forms in the phase 2 construction deposit in Q21-X22/3--4 and B/1/21-22/3' by R J Pollard, (234--5) conclude the report.

Fieldwalking and excavations were carried out in 1990 at the site of `Ypwinesfleot' where Saxons and St Augustine are supposed to have first set foot on British soil. A Beaker burial, LBA hoard, IA and Belgic settlement remains, and Roman activity peaking in the fourth century were indicated.
