This paper explores some aspects of Romanization in Kent. Firstly it touches on the patchy nature of villa distribution in the county and suggests that Romanization within the civitas of the Cantiaci may have been similarly uneven. It then examines Romanization more generally and poses questions about its nature and extent.

Excavation revealed two cremation burials, indicating a Roman settlement in the vicinity of the site. Two areas of burning, both approximately fifty metres from the burials, are interpreted as possible cremation pyres (ustrina). Considers that there is reasonable archaeological evidence supporting the presence of a settlement, possibly a small town, situated in this area on Watling Street. Documents the history of excavations at the Romano-British site, which was producing quantities of smelted iron between the late-first and mid-second century AD. It appears unlikely that there were any major stone structures in the immediate area, despite the presence of Classis Britannica stamped tiles. Activity appears to have ceased in the later-second century AD. Also proposes an amended course for the Rochester--Bodiam Roman road.

A watching brief and small-scale excavation on the route of a new gas pipeline indicated the existence of a substantial Romano-British settlement. It has been suggested that this could be the Roman town of Durolevum. Pottery has identified two main phases of occupation: from the beginning of the Roman period through to the middle of the second century; and from 270 AD onwards. No definite structural remains have been identified, but roof, floor and box-flue tiles were all recovered. The faunal remains consisted primarily of cattle and sheep (totalling 90%). Documents the history and archaeology of the medieval manor house which was closely associated with Archbishops John Morton and Thomas Cranmer. Notes that the ruined hall and chapel walls were demolished in 1964.

Focuses on various structural developments, including: the stone hall range; the south-west wing; the painted chamber; the brick fronting of the timber-framed wing; and the new bay to the west of the south-west wing.

Reconstructs a detailed record of Henry Oxinden's building and garden making activities in the mid-seventeenth century, based on: his correspondence; the notes he kept in his common place book; his account of the changes he made to his property; and on the description of his house and estate at Great Maydekin. Places the changes Oxinden made to his house and its setting within a wider social context.

Describes archaeological investigations in the 1930s and 1960s which were primarily concerned with establishing the shape of the east end of the Norman Abbey. Also features a study of the structural phases of the ?late-fifteenth-century Abbey gatehouse.
