Trans Bristol Gloucestershire Archaeol Soc 104

Records the work of a tireless collector and campaigner for the preservation of Bristol's historical remains of all kinds. Pritchard (d 1940) anticipated many methods and goals of the later 20th century in terms of museum-based urban archaeology, and maintained are enviable record of rapid publication.

At Cowl Lane, precinct boundaries of the abbey of SS Mary and Kenelm, 11th century or earlier to Dissolution, were exarnined. At Back Lane, rampart sections revealed an underlying agricultural phase (mid-Saxon?) and three phases of defences, the last two of early 10th and late 10th/11th century respectively. These are discussed in their Mercian and Wessex context, and the topography of Winchcombe is considered. Quantified pottery report (Saxon, med). (See also 87/1828.)

Four examples are now known, all from upland areas, but not forming a uniform group.
