SO 832182. Two kilns and associated waste-pits were excavated just outside the fortress defences. The main period of production was Flavian, and types included beakers, bowls and dishes in red and grey with a high quality finish; jars in variety; and flagons in cream slip. The rare decoration includes rouletting and grooving. The kilns were of updraught type with fixed pedestals, but clay tubing in the waste material suggests the presence of a more advanced type of kiln. The pottery is distinct from that termed Glevum Ware by Green.

[SP 1621]. (See abstract 69/519 for previous article). Some 240 samian and coarse ware vessels from the various sites near the Fosse Way mansio are described and illustrated, together with a few small bronze and iron objects.

Outside the four large urban centres, such Romanisation as was evident in the West depended mainly on the villas and hence was late and precarious. The small towns such as Butcombe and Camerton were industrial or agricultural with native ways uppermost. Although raids on the villas may have been exaggerated, there is some evidence for a raid along the Avon at about AD 367. Even so, three of these villas resumed occupation, and altogether 13 villas seem to have continued in use to AD 400, while several more contain buckles of the local "Home Guard". After 400, farming reverted to native standards, and while the large towns maintained civic order the lesser ones declined. Finally, new kinds of settlement like the two Cadburies came into use. [SO 8729]. The earliest church structure at Deerhurst identified by the author is provisionally equated with a Severnside monastery founded by St Germanus and later associated with St Samson of Dol. The comparison of its fabric with other "early rectangular churches" previously published by the author is reargued with additional evidence, and an origin for the type in 5th-century Brittany postulated. To the list of NW French examples is added Les Maselles, Thésée. An addendum takes note of Rahtz 1971 (see abstract 72/1740). D P

ST 591730. Late medieval kiln wasters differing from and later than the known Ham Green products were recovered from the foundation trench of the N aisle of the church, and are here termed St Peter's Ware.
